Netflix ‘Magical Sound’: A Story of Magic and Dreams

Netflix Korean drama ‘Magical Sound’ adapted from the webcomic ‘Annarasumanara’ (the incantation of the magician in the series), starring heartthrob Cha Eun-woo, who returns to the screen after two years, along with ‘Monster’ star Choi Chung-eun and ‘Goddess of Revenge’ star Hwang In-yeop. It is a six-episode series filled with fantasy, magic, and musical elements. Korean dramas rarely use musical elements in their storytelling, but ‘Magical Sound’ integrates song and dance sequences to express the inner thoughts of the main characters, offering a refreshing feel.

‘Magical Sound’ tells a story about magic and dreams. Lee Yi (played by Cha Eun-woo), a magician who descends from the sky, lives in an abandoned amusement park with a mysterious background. He repeatedly comes to the rescue of high school student Yoon Yae-i (played by Choi Chung-eun), reigniting her dream of becoming a magician.

Meanwhile, the top student at school, Ro Yi-deng (played by Hwang In-yeop), who has always followed the rules, has a new realization about life after meeting Lee Yi and Yoon Yae-i. He discovers that besides following others’ demands, life offers many choices.

About ‘Magical Sound’ Fun Facts 1: The Korean Wave of ‘Webtoon Adaptation Dramas’

In recent years, many Korean dramas have been adapted from popular web novels, including ‘Moon Embracing the Sun,’ ‘Love in the Moonlight,’ ‘Heirs,’ ‘My Roommate is a Gumiho,’ ‘Hell is Other People,’ ‘Zombie Detective,’ ‘The Spies Who Loved Me,’ ‘Itaewon Class,’ and ‘Magical Sound.’ The popularity of Korean ‘webtoon adaptation dramas’ is believed to be closely related to the appearance of the actors. Korean idols’ tall and slim figures, along with their high visual appeal, can perfectly embody the characters from the comics. With the rapid development of web novels in Korea (K-WEBTOON), seen as the next cultural industry after Korean dramas and K-POP to go global, when the comic itself has a considerable following online, these ‘webtoon adaptation dramas’ are very popular and easily generate high levels of discussion.
