Remember the ‘Mom’ in ‘Dark Glory’ who helped Jo Mei seek revenge? That line ‘What a broken sunset, yet so beautiful?!’ has become an eternal classic in the hearts of viewers.

Recently, the period drama ‘Encountering You in the Bitter Orange’ is currently airing, featuring the presence of ‘Mom.’

Although her appearance is brief, it has left a deep impression on the audience.

Especially in the series, where she shouts at her current husband, goes hysterical with her ex-in-laws, but grovels and bows to her daughter’s teacher, one can understand why she says her daughter’s love is just a thorn on her side!

01 Why Beg for Food Here?

‘Encountering You in the Bitter Orange’ is set in 1950 on Jeju Island, South Korea, where the islanders make a living by fishing, leading a simple life.

On the island, there is an ancient profession—haenyeo, women who dive into the deep sea bare-handed to search for sea snails, abalones, and other marine products.

The character played by Lee Hyo-ran, Guanglei, is also a haenyeo, and the strongest one at that.

Guanglei’s first husband passes away due to illness, and although she gives birth to a daughter, Wu Aichun, for the Wu family, she is expelled from the house on the grounds of ‘husband-killing.’

Later, Guanglei remarries Lin Bingzhe and gives birth to a pair of children.
