After gaining recognition from global film fans in political and action genres, the Korean film industry has seen a surge in high-quality horror films in the past two years, such as the widely discussed ‘Grave Breaker’ in 2024. This film not only achieved a high IMDB rating of 6.9 but also grossed $78.23 million at the box office, becoming the top-grossing film in Korea in 2024.

Following ‘Grave Breaker,’ Korea has released another exorcism-themed film titled ‘The Dark Sisters,’ starring Song Hye Kyo, set to premiere on January 24th.

This film had already sold over 140,000 tickets on the presale chart a week before, ranking first on the weekly chart.

10 years ago, there was a prequel, a typical exorcism film

This film is not the first attempt, as there was a prequel 10 years ago called ‘The Dark Priests.’

The film told the story of two male priests teaming up to save a girl possessed by a demon. One priest is a seasoned priest, while the other is a theology student who initially doubts the existence of demons and questions their actions. However, as the events unfold, he begins to change his mind and joins the old priest in performing exorcism rituals.

The film’s quality is considered top-notch for a horror film, with a rating of 6.

Although this film 10 years later is technically a sequel, the plot is nearly a carbon copy of the previous film, involving two nuns performing an exorcism ritual to save a young boy.

From the plot description, it’s evident that this is a typical Western-style exorcism film.
